In Summer 2016, I was in the inaugural class for UAB’s new Mentoring & Leadership Graduate Certificate. Receipt of this certificate required successful completion of 15-credit hours, including 5 credit hours specifically designed to explore the scholarship of mentoring and leadership:
- GRD 719 Introduction to Mentoring & Leadership (3 credit hours)
- GRD 735 Leadership 101 Seminar (1 credit hour)
- GRD 713 Mentoring 101 Seminar (1 credit hour)
Through the discussions and coursework involved in this graduate certificate, I was able to familiarize myself with the academic literature on mentoring and leadership, to consider and challenge my own leadership and mentoring styles, and to clearly set goals for the future. The fruit of these self reflections can be seen in my Leadership Philosophy and my Mentoring Philosophy.
