Birmingham–The Magic City–has a wealth of unique cultural landmarks and institutions. Unfortunately, undergraduates may live in a “bubble” on campus and miss out on experiencing them. I try, whenever possible and relevant, to use a Birmingham experience to bolster the learning that is occurring inside the classroom. This also helps students to apply the content material to real world situations. Two of my favorite examples include the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute and the Birmingham Museum of Art.
